SOCOM 4 a review

Let me start by stating i love the Playstation Move and the sports champions game and the price of the bundle is phenomenal, and if you price it out in pieces you come out way on top $150 for both move controllers and camera, $59.99 for Socom 4, and $40 for the sharpshooter, all priced in the bundle for about $169.99. So the price is a 5/5.

With all that said and out of the way, am i using the move sharpshooter combo? Absolutely not, i tried it for about an hour, most of that hour was used trying to calibrate the controller which is almost impossible to get it close to perfect. I calibrated it once I aimed at the centre the HUD showed it off to the left, second time it showed off to the right and it kept on going like this. When i finally got to a point to where i was reasonably happy with it i got into the game and i soon realized to play the game properly you have to keep the gun at the ready (up and in the firing position) the entire time, if you carry it in a relaxed way you will be walking around looking down and to the left, which i assume would get you killed if you were in Afghanistan.

So once i decided to switch to a normal controller i finally started the game and from what i have seen so far i am fairly impressed. There seems to be no major glitches such as when enemies are behind cover with a portion of their body is exposed and you shoot it it registers as a miss. There were a few things i was disappointed in, such as the enemy AI, for example i was standing it he middle of a road minding my own business not firing during a firefight and i was barley hit let alone killed. One very minor thing i wasn't impressed with was the voice acting of the enemy there were a few times i herd them say things such as goobala goobala goo, kinda reminded me of the Eddie Murphy stand up where he jumps out of a lake yelling goonany goo goo. The main problem i had was i find the game holds your hand too much, for example the game sets the mission objective markers tens of meters apart at times, telling you exactly where to go giving you no optionon how to get there.

On to the good points now, the big thing i was really impressed with is the game play, IK was starting to get really tired with the COD style of always running in guns a blazing. Socom 4 has the feature of sneaking past enemies instead of gunning them down, mind you will not always be able to this, but where you can it is up to you to find the bushes to do it. When you advance to a new mission you have the option to select the weapons you have collected over past missions along with the weapon mods you have unlocked by doing certain tasks, such as getting concurrent head shots, although i would prefer when selecting you equipment there should be a small description. The voice acting i find is not bad but by no means is it the best there ever was, the colourful language is entertaining at times but i find is over done at other times definitely not a game for children.

My over all impression of the game is that it is a very good game definitely worth buying for a fan of the series, but if your a COD fan looking to expand their tastes, so to speak, i would still buy it but wait to do so when you start to see it on the used rack at your local game store. If someone came up to me on the street tomorrow and asked if i would buy it again i would without hesitation say yes, but if you buy it in the Playstation move/Socom 4 combo pack (totally worth it just for the move and gun) you might want to try it with a normal controller. Overall i give the game a 6.5/10

Now Open for business

This is a new blog I'm starting, not only will there be game reviews but also opinion pieces about various things such as movies books and the state of gaming. I hope to have coverage of E3 when i go early next month, so wish me luck and hope this takes off.
